Page Rank Algorithm

Feb 11 at 1:29 PM
Good afternoon;

I am working on a subset of the World Trade Network, and wishes to apply NODEXL.

PageRank (and other centrality measures) are usually defined in terms of probability (random walk, Markov process, etc.).

So, one needs to normalise gross weights to obtain probabilities before applying the calculations.

Here goes my question:

Does NODEXL does the normalization within its calculation algorithm, or should the user calculate the frequencies before building the model?

In other words, should I put gross trade values in US$ in the ExcelSheet, or do I need to normalise the bilateral trade flows first by dividing by the total world trade value.

I do not want to duplicate a process already part of the algorithm.

I hope my question makes sense (I read the referenced book, but could not remember the issue to be treated)

Thanks a lot in advance

Hello Hubert,

NodeXL uses SNAP (http://snap.stanford.edu/index.html) to calculate graph metrics (including PageRank) and from what I can see in their code they already do the normalization. You can also contact them if you need more information http://snap.stanford.edu/contact.html

Good morning
Thanks a lot for taking the time to look at the code and for the tips.
Much appreciated.
Best regards
Hubert
