Facebook Fan Pages - Download Comments

Dec 8, 2015 at 2:53 PM
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if and how it is possible to download a selection of posts from a Facebook Fan Page AND the comments that each of these receive? I have been experimenting with the Facebook Fan Page importer and (after some error messages last week when I tried) I have managed to download a list of the posts by the page owner and a set of edges that (I think) show where the same user has commented on different posts but I have not been able to retrieve the text of the comments themselves.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Hello,

the comments are on the "Edges" worksheet in "Tweet" column. The naming is wrong on purpose to enable text analysis on comments.

Hello!

Thank you for the interest in NodeXL!

The Facebook Fan Page and Facebook Group network importers are now standard features of NodeXL Pro.

There is no longer any need to install the "Social Network Importer".

To perform a network import from Facebook, select either:

NodeXL>Data>Import>From Facebook Fan Page Network

Image

Or,

NodeXL>Data>Import>From Facebook Group Network

Image

Login and then select a query term.

Examples of Facebook networks analyzed with NodeXL can be found in the NodeXL Graph Gallery.

See: __https://www.nodexlgraphgallery.org/Pages/Default.aspx?search=facebook+fan__

In particular examples like:

__https://www.nodexlgraphgallery.org/Pages/Graph.aspx?graphID=66321__

An example recipe for Facebook data can be found here:

__https://www.nodexlgraphgallery.org/Pages/WorkbookOptions.ashx?graphID=65803__

Note that there is a "recipe" attached to these Facebook uploads. The "recipe" is the "Settings Options File" which can be linked from the very bottom of each uploaded data set (if the author chooses to include them).

You can use these recipes and apply them to your own data sets. Download a settings options file, and import it into NodeXL using:

NodeXL>Options>Import

Then apply the recipe to your data via:

NodeXL>Graph>Automate>Run

More information about the Automation process can be found on the ConnectedAction.Net blog

Automation is a feature of NodeXL Pro. These articles should describe the operation of the settings options files and the NodeXL > Graph > Automate feature:

Summary:
NodeXL has "recipes".
"Recipes" ("settings options files") can be found at the bottom of many pages in the NodeXL Graph Gallery.
You can save one of these recipes to your local system.
You can import the recipe into NodeXL via the NodeXL>Options>Import menu.
You can apply those options to your data via the NodeXL>Graph>Automate>Run command.

Marc

Thanks a lot for your reply.

When I try the steps you suggested, The "Get status updates (slow)" option is greyed (disabled). There are two options present in the NodeXL pro -> Data -> Import section: (i) "From Facebook Fan Page Network", (ii) "From Facebook Fan Page Network (v. 2.0)". Can you please help me with their differences. I tried both. Most I try From Facebook Fan Page Network (v. 2.0).
I am trying to test for Kurkure (id: 165647486802817), for dates between 21nd April 2016 to 22nd April 2016.

There is another issue. How to get the emojis (stickers: image format) used in comments. When I try using Facebook explorer, stickers are present is their old format, and while using JavaScript stickers are present in their code format. Both of these formats are relevant to my research. But in the data retrieved by NodeXL (I believe comments and status updates may be found in Labels -> Label and Labels -> Tooltip; and only comments may be found in Other Columns -> Tweet.
Also, is there a option to check time of the comment or post?
Sorry I am unable to attach screenshots, all it gives is following: "![Image]" and link "(http://example.com/logo.jpg)", instead of link or browse from system option
