Conflicts or negative connections?

Nov 28, 2011 at 8:51 PM

Hello,

As a new user of network graphics, is it possible to consider conflicts or negative connections between vertices?  I am trying to map connections between physical assets in a company.  Some of the assets combine to improve operational performance.  However, some compete with one another for business.  Is it possible to show both these positive and negative affinities in NodeXL?

Many thanks for any suggestions or insights.

How about making the width of an edge proportional to the sum of the positive and negative affinities between the edge's vertices?  Would that work?

Thanks for the reply.  The problem is that, in some cases, the sum is negative.  Not sure if network mapping software is best for showing ideas of attraction and repulsion?

I don't know.  Maybe someone else has suggestions for what type of visualization would be best for the kinds of relationships you're talking about.

NodeXL does allow for edges with color and style (solid, dashed, dotted dashed).

You might make positive connections blue and negative connections red, or positive connections solid, and negative connections dashed.

You might create two versions of the same network, one in which only positive connections are present and the other in which only negative connections are present. You could calculate metrics for each network.
