error message

Nov 18, 2010 at 7:58 AM

Hello, I am trying to import data from Twitter search but was shown "An unhandled exception occurre in your application. Contact your administrator or the author of this document for further assistant".

What should I do with it?

Thanks.

1.  Is a "Details" button included in the error message?  If so, please click it and copy the details here.

2.  Does this also occur when you attempt to import a Twitter user's network?  (NodeXL, Data, Import, From Twitter User's Network.)

3.  How about a Flickr user's network?  (NodeXL, Data, Import, From Flickr User's Network.)

Dear Tony,

Thank you for the email.

From: tcap479

1. Is a "Details" button included in the error message? If so, please click it and copy the details here.

The Korean words: "cannot find specific file(s)". Maybe some files are missing from my Windows XP?

2. Does this also occur when you attempt to import a Twitter user's network? (NodeXL, Data, Import, From Twitter User's Network.)

It occurs when I clicked "OK" and try to authorize NodeXL to use my Twitter account. A screen shot is attached in this email.

3. How about a Flickr user's network? (NodeXL, Data, Import, From Flickr User's Network.)

I did not try the Flickr user's network because I do not have a Flickr account.
But youtube user's network seems working ok.

Thank you.

Thank you for the details.  I suspect that this is a bug related to language.  We had a few earlier bugs that occurred only on non-English computers, and this could be another one.  I'll investigate.

In the meantime, the short-term workaround is to check "I don't have a Twitter account" instead of "I have a Twitter account, but I have not yet authorized NodeXL..." in the Twitter dialog boxes.  You'll still get the network you're asking for, but it might take longer if it's a large network.

Thanks,
    Tony

The problem is occurring on your computer when NodeXL attempts to open a Twitter Web page where you are supposed to authorize NodeXL to use your Twitter account.  Your computer is failing to open the Web page, and I don't know why.

Please try this:

* In the Windows Start menu, select Run.

* In the Run dialog box, enter this: http://twitter.com/oauth/authorize

* Click OK.

What happens?  What should happen is that a browser window will open to a Twitter page that says "Woah there!  This page requires some information that was not provided..."

[And yes, "whoa" is misspelled.  By Twitter, not by me.]

Dear Tony,

Yes, a window says "Woah there! ....." was opened.
But there is also another windows:

'Http://twitter.com/oauth/authorize' (s) could not be found. Make sure you enter the name correctly and try again. To search for files [Start] button, then click [Search] click"

(I used Google translate to translate Korean to English, therefore the sentence may sound strange).

Maybe the problem is only related to my PC? I will ask around my department and see if anyone has this problem.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Chien-leng

Dear Tony,

I asked other colleagues whether they have similar problems but it seems that I am the only one who is having this problem. Thus, I am thinking to install NodeXL again. Do you know how I can uninstall the package? I could not find the problem in the list of add/remove programs from the control panel.

Thank you.

Best,
Chien-leng

[And yes, "whoa" is misspelled. By Twitter, not by me.]

Chien-leng:

I don't think that uninstalling and reinstalling NodeXL is going to make any difference in the behavior you are seeing.  But if you want to try it, NodeXL shows up in Add/Remove Programs as "Microsoft NodeXL Excel Template."  You can also run the original Setup.exe program again (after downloading it from CodePlex if necessary) and select the "Remove" option from the Setup wizard.

I don't understand why you are getting two windows when you enter the Twitter address I gave you into Windows Start, Run.  I would expect just one window, the one that says "Woah there!"  This is a clue as to why NodeXL is unable to open the Twitter page.  Does the second window, the one that says "'Http://twitter.com/oauth/authorize' (s) could not be found...", have a window title that tells you which program that window belongs to?

Dear Tony,

I couldn't tell which program that window belongs to, so I attached a screen shot in this email. :)

Best,
Chien-leng

Hello, Chien-leng:

Unfortunately, CodePlex strips off attachments in posts, so I didn't get your screen shot.  Can you please create a new "item" on our Issue Tracker tab, which is at http://nodexl.codeplex.com/workitem/list/basic?  Unlike the Discussions tab, the Issue Tracker tab lets you add attachments.  You don't have to explain anything in the new item; I'll know what it is.

Thanks,
    Tony

Dar Tony,

A new item was created.
Thank you.

Chien-leng

Hello, Chien-leng:

I believe you have multiple programs registered to handle http addresses on your computer.

Normally, Windows is set to use a particular program to open any address that starts with "http:".  This is typically Internet Explorer, Firefox, or whatever browser you use.  When a person enters an "http:" address in the Windows Start menu, or when a program such as NodeXL attempts to open such an address, Windows uses whatever program is registered to open the address.

On your computer, however, there appear to be two such programs registered, which is why two windows open up when you enter an "http:" address in the Windows Start menu, and why NodeXL is unable to open the "http://twitter.com/oauth/authorize" address it needs to authorize NodeXL to use your Twitter account.  I do not know how your computer got into this state (in fact, I didn't even know it was possible to get Windows to do this), and I don't want to tell you how to fix it for fear of messing something up.

Do you have an IT support staff?  If so, tell them that you have two "HTTP protocol handlers" on your computer and that it's interfering with at least one program.  You can easily demonstrate the problem by entering any Web address in the Windows Start menu and watching two windows open.  This is not supposed to happen.  Perhaps they can track down the mysterious second window.

(By the way, if it were one of my computers, the first thing I would check out is whether the second handler is somehow connected to malware.)

Dear Tony,

Thank you for your email. I will ask my colleague to help me sort out this problem. After that, I will try NodeXL again and will report to you how it goes.
Thank you for investigating the problem for me.

Best regards,
Chien-leng
