What It Is

NodeXL Excel Template 2014 displays and analyzes network graphs created from edge and vertex lists stored in an Excel workbook. It is compatible with Excel 2007, Excel 2010 and Excel 2013.

Please help support the development of NodeXL with your donation.

What's New

Are you upgrading from an older version of the NodeXL Excel Template? If so, you must uninstall the older version before you install NodeXL Excel Template 2014.

You can now set different fonts for edge, vertex and group labels.

NodeXL will now automatically update itself when a new release becomes available.

See the Complete NodeXL Release History for more information.

How to Install and Run It

  1. Are you upgrading from an older version of the NodeXL Excel Template? If so, you must uninstall the older version before you install NodeXL Excel Template 2014.
  2. Download the NodeXLExcelTemplate2014Setup.exe file from this page, then run it.
  3. If you are asked to accept the "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime (x86 and x64)", click the Accept button.
  4. When you are asked "Are you sure you want to install this customization?", click the "Install" button.
  5. In the Windows Start menu or Start screen, search for "NodeXL", then click "NodeXL Excel Template" in the search results.

Read This if You Are Upgrading From an Older Version

  1. As mentioned above, you must uninstall the older version before you install NodeXL Excel Template 2014. If you don't do this, NodeXL Excel Template 2014 will install successfully, but you will get an error message when you attempt to run the new version. (The error message includes the word "COMException.")
  2. If you use third-party graph data importers, such as the Social Network Importer for NodeXL, note that the folder where the importers are stored has changed. See Using third-party graph data importers in NodeXL Excel Template 2014.
  3. If you use the NodeXL Network Server, an advanced command-line program that downloads a network from Twitter and stores the network on disk in several file formats, note that the program is no longer a part of NodeXL Excel Template. See How to use the NodeXL Automation Tools.

Great software for easy SNA. More historic/time related features needed.

I too am getting annoyed by the donation popup. Every time? Is there no way to disable this?
by ronnymuk on Jun 23 at 12:03 PM
Sorry to annoy our users. Sadly, we need our users to support the project for it to continue. You are welcome to dismiss the beg screen when it appears by pressing "escape" or clicking "cancel". We do plan a feature that will remove the beg screen for registered users but that has been delayed as we work on more core features of the project.

Not sure which release this is but I started getting a popup inside Excel begging for money. I used this to track a few links and now I have to uninstall it. It's not worth it to have to deal with this popup every time I open the program. Popup's inside a program, are you kidding? You lose all credibility.

Sorry to annoy our users, but NodeXL is a donation supported project that has received remarkably little in the way of financial support. If we are going to continue, our users, particularly commercial users, will need to contribute. Our individual and student users are always welcome to use the tools without any donation, and we hope that dismissing the donation request at each opening will not be too great a burden.

Overall, thank you for creating a program so that non-computer science policy persons can harness the power of social media data for their research, and that is why I am giving you four stars. However, I have a few questions/problems with the actual program. I have MS Windows 8, and the program does not seem to like to run on Windows 8. When I open the excel program to run NodeXL the program flickers a bunch, but in an annoying way, not in a "program is thinking" type of way. Also, the program does not want to collect all aspects of the data for some users, for whatever reason. Also, I would like to install the updated version, but I wanted to confirm that all of the data I have already collected and saved as MS Excel files will not be lost if I install the updated version. Please confirm. Either way, I am only using NodeXL to collect data, and wanted to confirm that you are in compliance with Twitter's revised Terms of Service, Rules, and all Twitter policies and procedures. Is NodeXL in compliance with all of Twitter's rules, policies and procedures that could impact Institutional Review Board approvals and publication of research results in a scholarly journal?

Hello! NodeXL is compatible with Windows 8, please post your issue to the discussion board so we can follow-up in detail. NodeXL should collect data for all users (depending on the source of data and the query term and other privacy settings). Updating NodeXL will not effect earlier datasets. NodeXL follows all terms of use and terms of service for all systems it connects to.

NodeXL is the best SNA tool I have ever used. It is especially user-friendly and I'm continually impressed by how the developers update the program to make the power of network analysis available to all levels of users. They are also very responsive to user input and requests.

NodeXL is an outstanding add-in. I have used it for many years, and it just keeps getting better. I don't know of a better tool for analyzing social network graphs. It's particularly powerful since once can also leverage the power of Excel to do additional filtering, graphing and other processing.

NodeXL is a simple to use yet powerful way for any spreadsheet user to gain the power of network analysis, particularly analysis of social media networks.

This program literally sucks and is virtually impossible to install on Windows 8. Also it is slow, doesn't display nodes correctly, and is just generally terrible.
by randomreviews on Oct 30, 2014 at 1:52 PM
Thank you for your thoughtful review. We do run NodeXL on Windows 8. Can you share any error messages? How should NodeXL better display nodes? NodeXL, like many network analysis tools, demands significant RAM and CPU resources for large scale networks. How large is the network you are analyzing?

By mistake I install new without unistalling previous version. What can I do to solve this? In several places mention that this will produce malfunction. OK, I´m there. How to unistall both to do a fresh installation? I tried several ways :(
by Rbrom on Oct 8, 2014 at 12:19 AM
Removing all mentions of NodeXL from the Add and Remove Programs feature in the Control Panel should get you to a clean state. You can then re-install the latest NodeXL. NodeXL will then automatically update itself as new versions are made available - so this is the last time you will need to deal with this.
