Installation Steps

Follow these steps to install and use the template:

Download the Zip file.
Unzip it into any folder. Use WinZip or a similar program, or just right-click the Zip file in Windows Explorer and select "Extract All."
Close Excel if it's open.
Run Setup.exe. You need to be an administrator to do this. (You don't need to be an administrator to actually use the NodeXL template once it's installed, however.) The setup program might install some Microsoft prerequisites. These are the Microsoft. .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1, the Microsoft Office 2007 Primary Interop Assemblies, and the Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for the Office System 3.0 Runtime Service Pack 1.
Delete the unzipped files. They're no longer needed.
Register. If you didn't register while running Setup.exe, please do so here. Registration is optional.
Use the template. In the Windows Start menu, click "All Programs" (Windows 7 or Vista) or "Programs" (XP), then "NodeXL," then "Excel Template."

Installing for multiple users: There is an option in the setup program to install for "Just Me" or "Everyone." Most people should accept the default "Just Me" option. If you think you need the "Everyone" option, please see How to install NodeXL for multiple users for more information.

The NodeXL class libraries can be used to display network graphs in .NET applications.

To include a NodeXL network graph in a WPF desktop or Windows Forms application, unzip the Zip file into any directory, then see the "NodeXLControl" topic in the NodeXLApi.chm help file.
To include a NodeXL graph in another type of .NET application, see the "NodeXLVisual" and "GraphDrawer" topics in the help file.

Important Note: NodeXL works well with graphs that have up to a few thousand vertices and edges. It might work satisfactorily with larger graphs if you have a fast computer and some patience, but if you have very large graphs, you might want to look at SNAP, the Stanford Network Analysis Platform. SNAP can handle graphs with millions of vertices and edges.

Another Important Note: In version 1.0.1.193 NodeXL switched parent organizations, and that forced a change to the NodeXL namespaces and the filenames of the NodeXL DLLs. The Microsoft.NodeXL.Core namespace was changed to Smrf.NodeXL.Core, for example, and the Microsoft.NodeXL.Core.dll file was renamed to Smrf.NodeXL.Core.dll. ("Smrf" stands for "Social Media Research Foundation.".) We regret the trouble this will cause with existing applications, but it couldn't be helped.

And One More: You may see nothing but empty topics when you attempt to view the NodeXLApi.chm file. To fix this problem, which is due to a security restriction in Internet Explorer, right-click the chm file in Windows Explorer, select Properties, and click the Unblock button on the General tab.

With motif simplification, common repeating network motifs are replaced with easily understandable glyphs that require less space, are easier to understand, and reveal hidden relationships.

NodeXL can group the graph's vertices using three kinds of motifs. Using fan motifs helps get rid of the large fans of singly-connected vertices around the edge of your graph. Connector motifs, instead, focus on redundant connections between a pair of anchor vertices. Finally, cliques allow you to simplify completely connected groups of vertices.

To use this new feature, go to NodeXL, Analysis, Groups, By Motif in the ribbon.

If you simply want to add a NodeXL graph to your own application, you probably don't need the NodeXL source code. Instead, please see the latest download for the "NodeXL Class Libraries" on the Downloads tab. The Class Libraries are a set of prebuilt .NET assemblies that contain a NodeXLControl, which you can drop into a WPF or Windows Forms application.

The NodeXL source code is only for programmers who want to customize the source code or see how it works.

This is a Visual Studio 2008 solution, although it can be used in Visual Studio 2010 with a few extra steps.

To use the NodeXL source code in Visual Studio 2008, do the following:

Download the source code from the Source Code tab.
See NodeXL\HowToBuildNodeXL.txt.

To use the NodeXL source code in Visual Studio 2010, do the following:

Download the source code from the Source Code tab.
Make copies of the original NodeXL\ExcelTemplate\*.Designer.cs files. There are eight of them: Sheet1.Designer.cs, Sheet2,Designer.cs, and so on.
Make a copy of the original NodeXL\ExcelTemplate\GraphMetrics\GraphMetricDescriptions.Designer.cs file.
Open NodeXL.sln in Visual Studio 2010, which starts the conversion wizard.
Let the conversion wizard run to completion. The conversion succeeds without complaint, but unfortunately the *.Designer.cs files get mangled during the conversion.
Overwrite the (badly converted) *.Designer.cs files with the copies you made earlier.
See NodeXL\HowToBuildNodeXL.txt.

You need Excel 2007 if you want to build the Excel-related projects in the solution. If you do not need the Excel-related projects, you can remove them from the solution.
