NodeXL compatability with unmodified Excel

Once I have created a graph in NodeXL and saved the xlsx file, can this file be opened by a standard (out of the box) version of Excel? Or does that Excel need to have NodeXL installed?

A NodeXL generated Excel workbook can be opened and read on almost any copy of Excel or related spreadsheet applications.

However, only versions of Excel with NodeXL installed will be able to display the network visualization or perform network analysis operations.

On versions of Excel without NodeXL the data is visible (and useful) but the network manipulation and display features that NodeXL implements are gone.

Hope that helps!

Is there some way to generate a file that carries whatever NodeXL goodness it needs along with it? The users I am trying to reach are not able to perform admin level modifications to their Excel installations.

Unfortunately, no. NodeXL needs to be installed on the computer to get NodeXL's graph pane and custom ribbon tab.

No, the network features must be installed first to read the files completely.

However, we do support the upload of the graph image and network description to the NodeXL Graph Gallery.

If public display of your network data is not acceptable, you can also generate an email that contains the image and description. See NodeXL>Data>Export.
