I use NodeXL for the majority of my research but sometimes do visuals in other programs. However, when exporting data groups do not transfer. Is there a way that exporting to a graphML file the assigned group can be saved as a Vertice attribute?

Yes.  Do the following:

1. Add a column to the right end of the Vertices worksheet and enter "Group" for the column heading.  Format the column as General.  (If you haven't already added other columns, this can be done by just replacing the "Add Your Own Columns Here" text with "Group".)

2. In the first data cell of the Group column, enter this formula:

=INDEX(GroupVertices, MATCH(Vertices[[#This Row],[Vertex]], GroupVertices[Vertex], 0), 1)

3. Export your workbook to GraphML.  Each vertex in the exported GraphML will now have an attribute called "Group".
